Lt. Gen. Edgar Ratcliffe Anderson, Jr., MD, Surgeon General of the U.S. Air Force, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in dermatological surgery.

Dr. Anderson’s area of expertise is in Mohs surgery, which is used to treat common types of skin cancer and in various forms of dermatological surgeries. While his original interest had been in joining the US Air Force, he was misinformed by a rumor that stated having a lengthy scar would disqualify him from serving. Instead, he enrolled in medical school and found out later that he could serve in the Air Force with his scar. He served for two years as a flight surgeon and then continued with pilot training with the intention of joining the astronaut program. Notably, at the end of this training, Dr. Anderson finished in the first place, receiving the prestigious Top Gun Award. Following this, his squadron was relocated to Thailand where he flew in 106 combat missions.

Since 2001, Dr. Anderson has served as the president and Chief Executive Officer of Anderson Medical Consulting, LLC. From 2002 to 2006, he utilized his experience and skills in the field as a Professor of Medicine at Loyola University Medical Center. Prior to opening his consulting service, Dr. Anderson served as the Executive Vice President and CEO of the American Medical Association and was a Dean and Professor at the University of Missouri. Additionally, he is the founder and CEO of Veterans Health Medical Supplies and was a board member of The Fisher House in 2006. He was the Surgeon General of the US Air Force in 2006.

Dr. Anderson has been recognized on numerous occasions for his service in both civilian and militaristic endeavors. He has received a Decorated Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, a Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, a Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, a Meritorious Service Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, an Air Medal with Nine Oak Leaf Clusters and an Air Force Commendation Medal. Dr. Anderson has maintained professional affiliation with the Westmoreland Country Club, the University Club and Rotary International. Dr. Anderson attributes his success to his wife Sandra who has been a tremendous partner. She was a military brat herself, and able to understand the complexities of military life. She was and is, in his view, a perfect military wife.
