Thomas E. Ahlering, MD, Vice Chairman and Professor at the University of California, Irvine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Urology.

Dr. Ahlering is well known as the inventor of the da Vinci urology surgery, a minimally invasive, robotically applied group of procedures at the cutting edge of medical technology. He has been named a Top Patient Care Provider of the University of California, Irvine, from 2011 to 2017, and garnered numerous accolades in 2005 as a pioneer of robotic urology surgery. Dr. Ahlering was named an honorary professor of the Peking University Urological Training College in 2004, and now holds the title of professor and vice chairman of the department of Urology at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. Dr. Ahlering is chief of the division of oncological urology at Irvine.

Dr. Ahlering is a recipient of the Albert Marquis Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award, and appeared in the 61st edition of Who’s Who in America. He was born to Joseph Jerome Ahlering and Gwendolyn Ryan, and attended the University of California, Berkeley, to earn a BS in chemistry in 1975. He also conducted coursework with the California State University, Hayward, and completed a MD at the St. Louis University in Missouri in 1979. Dr. Ahlering first entered teaching as a clinical instructor of urology at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. He became director of urology at City Hope Medical Center just one year later, in 1985. Dr. Ahlering joined UC Irvine in 1992, and has made great strides as one of its top medical professors.

In addition to awards for innovation, Dr. Ahlering received a 2005 Physician of Excellence honor from Orange Coast Magazine, a 2004 Teaching Award from UC Irvine, and was named to America’s Best Doctors from 1994 to 2009. He has supported numerous medical groups, including the American Urological Association, the American Medical Association, and the Orange County Urological Association. He is a prolific contributor to medical literature. Dr. Ahlering is also the proud father of Jessica, Timothy, and William with his wife, Wendy Crum.
